Most baseball fans know Jeff Passan as the ultimate insider—the man who breaks the biggest news in Major League Baseball. But when it came to his son Jack’s recruiting journey, Jeff realized that even an "insider" needs an expert guide.

In a raw, no-holds-barred discussion with Diamond College Showcase’s Ryan Crawford and Andy Kiriakedes (EMD Baseball), Jeff opened up about why he turned to Ryan’s expertise and why the modern "Cattle Call" showcase model is failing today's families.

1. "The System is Broken"

Jeff’s take on the current state of youth baseball was blunt. He described a system that often prioritizes volume and social media hype over actual development and fit.

"I think youth baseball, by and large, is broken," Jeff said. "The fact that we spend a disproportionate number of our summer weekends inside of unaccommodating stadiums... it wears on you. It’s not friendly for the parents, and it’s not friendly for the kids."

Jeff’s solution? He held Jack out of the "Travel Ball Machine" until he was 16, focusing on development and only entering the circuit when the timing was right.

2. Why an ESPN Insider Relied on Ryan Crawford

Despite his deep connections at the Major League level, Jeff recognized that college recruiting is a specialized world. He leaned heavily on Ryan Crawford’s expertise to navigate the "Information Gap" and filter out the noise.

The Passan family used Ryan’s roadmap to identify which schools actually matched Jack’s profile. Jeff emphasized that having a trusted advisor who understands the "High-Academic Vibe" is the difference between a successful commitment to a school like Williams College and a wasted summer.

3. The Death of the "Cattle Call" Showcase

Jeff was highly critical of the massive showcases where hundreds of players are run through a mill.

"There are two kinds of showcases," Jeff explained. "There’s the 'Cattle Call,' where hundreds of kids are just run through measurables. And then there’s the intimate environment... where you actually get to rub elbows with coaches."

In a small-scale event, you aren't just jersey #114; you are a human being having 1-on-1 conversations with staffs from colleges.

4. The "Vibe Check" and the Support Staff Role

Jeff shared that while he booked the flights and hotels, he was strictly the "support staff." Jack had to be the one to walk the campuses and talk to the coaches.

"Jack came back and said, 'I really vibed with the Williams coach.' Williams wasn't even on our radar until that moment. You have to listen to your kid. If they don't vibe with the coach, they won't survive the 4-year grind."

5. Discipline Over Luck: The "Chicken Nugget" Protocol

Jack’s transformation from a 140 lb freshman to a 200 lb senior wasn't a miracle—it was a result of the "motor" coaches look for.

Jeff joked about Jack eating 30 chicken nuggets a night to hit his caloric goals while squatting 470 lbs. In the high-academic world, coaches are magnetically drawn to the kid who has the physical discipline to match their GPA.

6. The "Agency" Test

The most vital takeaway? If the parent is doing the work, the kid isn't getting recruited.

"Jack did this on his own," Jeff noted. "He reached out to coaches. He sent the videos. If they can’t manage a recruiting email at 17, how are they going to handle a 500-level Organic Chemistry exam while playing a 40-game season? Give them agency."

Are You Tired of Being a Number?

Success in the recruiting world isn't about being seen by everyone—it's about being recognized by the right people in an environment that allows for real connection. Diamond College Showcase was built on the "Small-Scale" philosophy that Jeff Passan used to help Jack find his home at Williams.
